Maine Heritage Weavers began in 2002 with the hope of carrying on the traditions of the Bates Manufacturing Company. Bates Manufacturing was established in 1850 in New England and quickly became one of the largest textile mills in New England. The first bedspread was produced in 1858 and the company was renown for its quality and design. The Bates Manufacturing Company survived the Civil War and continued on into the 21st century. In 2000, the Bates Manufacturing Company closed its doors. The Maine Heritage Weavers were founded in 2002 when the former Bates President and his daughter purchased the equipment from the original factory. Employing many of the same people, with over 100 years of combined experience weaving and manufacturing, Maine Heritage Weavers continues to produce heirloom woven bedding.
